4-H Youth Development
4-H Does Make a Difference!
High quality 4-H activities engage youth in subject areas (content) in an environment (context) where youth feel safe and free to share, learn, and grow. The connection between content and context is notable because together they create a synergy that is uniquely 4-H. Together, they engage youth in positive experiences that put young people on the path to thriving.
Content
The content of 4-H programs focus on
- Citizenship
- Healthy Living
- Science, Engineering and Technology
These subject areas clearly describe program priorities and provide broad topics that help to organize and focus program development, management, and implementation strategies.
Citizenship
4-H strives to develop young people who are engaged and informed citizens. Through experiential activities, members learn leadership, empathy, communication, and organization while expanding their role in decision-making processes. With intentional connection to their communities, youth come to understand "the big picture" and their role in civic affairs.
Healthy Living
4-H healthy living encompasses a holistic approach, including healthy eating habits, physical fitness, the capacity to recognize and direct emotions, and the ability to develop and maintain positive social interactions and relationships.
Science, Engineering and Technology
4-H science, engineering, and technology projects engage youth in inquiry-based learning. Through participation, youth improve their science, engineering, and technology knowledge, skills and abilities. The scientific process can be applied to a wide range of life experiences throughout the lifespan.
