What Exactly is the Master Gardener Program? The Master Gardener program is a non-profit volunteer program offered through land grant universities throughout the United States, including the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in partnership with San Bernardino County. The purpose of the Master Gardener program in San Bernardino County is to provide accurate and objective information on all aspects of home horticulture (tree and lawn care, vegetable and flower gardening, soil and water management, composting, fertilization, pest control, and plant propagation) to county residents through the use of trained volunteers. Master Gardeners provide a wide array of community services, including staffing phone hotlines, writing weekly newspaper articles, participating in hands-on demonstrations, teaching public classes, and providing educational materials for school and community garden projects. How Can I Become a Master Gardener? Contact a Master Gardener at (909) 387-2182 and they will send you an application. To be eligible for becoming a Master Gardener, you must attend all training classes and volunteer a minimum of 50 hours during the course of the training.
