AN INVESTMENT THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE Our mission is to help people improve their lives through an educational process using scientific knowledge focused on identified issues and needs For 86 years, Cooperative Extension has been helping to improve the local economy and the well being of the agricultural industry, natural resources, and communities in San Bernardino County. Cooperative Extension is the county-based arm of the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources that brings scientific discovery and educational resources to solve local agricultural, natural resource and nutrition-related problems. Staff also provides diagnostic and science-based solutions to individuals needing help with house and yard plants and pests. Cooperative Extension is an alliance of Federal, State and local government. The Federal Government through USDA contributes money to the State for Cooperative Extension. California adds to USDA’s portion and through the University of California provides county-based academic positions and statewide support for programs. · Reduce teen pregnancy and juvenile delinquency: provide out of school 4-H programs that engage adolescents and pre-adolescents in constructive activities while limiting the time they spend alone. · Address consumer financial issues including use of credit, savings, investing, and bankruptcy: teach families and teenagers financial planning, credit management and consumer skills. · Develop tomorrow's work force: 4-H Youth Development programs teach career and leadership education through community-based learning experiences with a focus on science and literacy. · Focus of food safety: we address food safety from the farm to your table. A new focus in this area is homeland security. · Target obesity and overweight issues: healthy eating and lifestyle habits reduce cancer and heart disease risks, reduce health care costs and improve on-the-job productivity. We help business succeed in today's environment... We serve a greater number of San Bernardino citizens and communities through technology... We promote sound management and conservation of the Counties natural resources... · Conduct research, educational activities, and good working relationships with a broad range of people. · Deliver science based information to private landowners; resource management professionals working on private, State and Federal lands; and other groups such as users of public lands, conservation organizations, and the agriculture and forest products industries. · Provide access to Extension programs and information 24/7. · Make information available in new forms such as electronic newsletters, CD-ROMs and on the Internet. · Provide technology access to isolated areas of San Bernardino County learning opportunities via TV/satellite · Provide economic security for San Bernardino's agricultural industry. · Maximize environmental quality controls in agricultural enterprises. · Focus on San Bernardino's green industry, increasing personnel and expertise in commercial horticulture industries; provide training on business and human resources management; expand urban and Master Gardener programs.
